CBM Calculation (Volume vs. Actual Weight)

LCL sea freight is charged based on the "chargeable weight," which is whichever value is greater between the Volume (CBM) and the Actual Gross Weight. The international standard conversion rate is 1 CBM = 1,000 kg.

  • CBM Formula: Width (cm) x Length (cm) x Height (cm) ÷ 1,000,000 = Total CBM
  • Example 1 (Charged by CBM): 2 boxes of garments, size 100x100x100 cm each, total weight 150 kg. The volume calculation is 2 CBM. Since the volume is greater than the actual weight, this shipment is charged at 2 CBM.
  • Example 2 (Charged by Weight): 1 wooden crate of machinery, size 80x80x80 cm, actual weight 1,200 kg. The volume is 0.51 CBM. However, because the actual weight is 1,200 kg (equivalent to a 1.2 CBM ratio), this shipment is charged at 1.2 CBM.

Customs Clearance

Outbound Customs Clearance (Bangkok Port)
Exporting goods from Thailand via Bangkok Port (Klong Toey) involves the following key statutory procedures:

  • Customs Paperless Registration: First-time exporters or businesses must register with Thailand Customs before shipping. (If you haven't registered yet, Together Freight offers an efficient setup service for you).
  • Standard Export Documentation: A Commercial Invoice and a Packing List are mandatory for submitting the export declaration through the electronic customs system (e-Customs).
  • HS Code Classification & Licensing: Certain controlled commodities (e.g., foodstuffs, fresh fruits, processed wood, specific electronic components) may require specialized permits from government agencies, such as Phytosanitary Certificates or Certificates of Origin (C/O).
  • Cargo Clearance: Once your LCL cargo is packed and arrives at Bangkok Port, it undergoes electronic screening. If a shipment is flagged for physical inspection (Red Line), our dedicated customs brokers will immediately facilitate the inspection with customs officers on site.
Inbound Customs Clearance (Hong Kong Port)
Hong Kong is globally recognized as a Free Port, maintaining highly liberal trade policies. However, businesses must be aware of the following local regulations:
  • Duty-Free for Most Commodities: Most general goods imported into Hong Kong are exempt from customs duties and bear no Value Added Tax (VAT) or Goods and Services Tax (GST), significantly reducing destination costs.
  • Dutiable Controlled Commodities: Excise duties apply strictly to only 4 categories: liquors (with an alcohol strength of more than 30% by volume), tobacco, hydrocarbon oil, and methyl alcohol. An Import License is required for these specific items.
  • Import Declaration Lodgement: Although most goods are duty-free, local consignees or importers are legally required to lodge an accurate Import Declaration with the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department (C&ED) within 14 days of the cargo's arrival.
  • Final Cargo Delivery: Once inbound clearance is completed and the LCL container is unstuffed (devanned) at the destination Container Freight Station (CFS), the consignee can choose to pick up the cargo at the port or utilize Together Freight's convenient Door-to-Door delivery service directly to their warehouse or store in Hong Kong.

Documentation & Value-Added Services

  • Export Documentation: Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Product Details, and Export License (if applicable).
  • Value-Added Services: Customs Paperless Registration (Add Paperless), Door-to-Door Delivery Service, and Professional Packing / Wooden Crating / Fumigation Services.

Dangerous Goods & MSDS Requirement

  • Important Notice: For shipments containing chemicals, liquids, powders, or any built-in batteries (e.g., electronic gadgets, Bluetooth speakers, power banks), a valid English version of the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) must be submitted to our team 3-5 days prior to the cargo closing date for carrier review and safety approval.

Understanding CFR Hong Kong Shipping Terms (CFS to CFS)

Shipping LCL cargo to Hong Kong under CFR (Cost and Freight) terms means that the seller (Exporter in Thailand) is responsible for paying the costs and freight necessary to bring the goods to the destination port (Hong Kong). However, the risk of loss or damage transfers to the buyer once the goods are safely loaded on board the vessel at the departure port (Bangkok).

Key Notes for Transparency:

  • Risk Transfer Point: Risk transfers from the seller to the buyer as soon as the goods are "on board" the vessel in Bangkok, not when the ship arrives in Hong Kong.
  • Hong Kong Destination Charges: The buyer is strictly responsible for paying all Hong Kong Local Charges (e.g., THC, documentation fees) and CFS warehouse handling charges at the destination port before cargo release.
